    The specific heat capacity, c, of a substance is defined as the heat required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of the substance by 1K or 1 .the S.I unit is Jkg-1 -1 or Jkg-1 K-1

    Heat capacity (C) is related to specific heat capacity (c) as follows.

    Heat capacity = mass  specific heat capacity

    Quantity of heat (Q) is also related to heat capacity as follows

    Quantity of heat = heat capacity temperature change

    Q = C (θ21) or Q = Cθ

    20160 = 2 2520( θ2- 25 )

    20160 = 5040 ( θ2- 25 )

    20160 = 5040θ2 – 126000

    20160 + 126000 = 5040θ2

    146160 = 5040θ2

     θ2 = 14160 / 5040 = 29

    Misali na hudu:

    500g of water is heated so that its temperature rises from 30 to 72  in 7minutes. Calculate the heat supplied per minute. (specific heat capacity = 4200Jkg-1K-1  )    WAEC 1994

    Final temperature, θ2 = 72; specific heat capacity, c = 4200Jkg-1K-1 ;

    Substituting in Q = mc (θ21)

    = 0.5  4200   (72 – 30)

    = 0.5  4200  42 = 88200 J

    888200J is the total heat supplied in the 7 minutes, therefore heat supplied per minute is 88200 / 7 = 12600J
